The Argonaut: The city of Santa Monica and The Bay Foundation have launched an expansion of their dune restoration project, the Santa Monica Beach Dunes, which will restore almost 30 additional acres of beach along the shoreline back to a natural state.
The Feb. 24 announcement marked Phase III of a resilience plan to see dunes built along all of Santa Monica Beach. These dunes provide natural defenses against sea-level rise, beautify the coastline and enhance wildlife habitat, the city said in a news release. Enhanced dunes can provide better buffering against climate threats like erosion and flooding in comparison to hard infrastructure like seawalls.
